The Maatsuyker group is located 5.5 kilometres south of Tasmania, Australia. MAATSUYKER is the southernmost island of the group and the Australian
continental shelf. This Wilderness World Heritage Site is renowned for its inhospitable climate, rich marine wildlife, and Australia's southernmost


There are six islands and two groups of rocks; the main island, MAATSUYKER, is 2.6 kilometres long and 1.2 kilometres wide. Needle Rocks lies just off the south west tip; Walker Island, Flat Witch Island and Western Rocks lie just to the north whilst De Witt Island sits 6.5 kilometres to the north-east and Flat Top Island and Round Top Island 7 kilometres east.


Abel Tasman, who led the first known European expedition first sighted Tasmania on 24 November 1642. His journal entry on1 December 1642, seven days later, refers to Wit’s islands, Sueers islands, Maetsuickers islands and Boereels islands. The names of all of these islands and Tasmania itself - then named Van Diemen’s Land - came from then members of the Council of India of Tasman's employer, the Dutch East India Company and, as Governor- General, Antonio Van Diemen got the name of the largest island.


The site for Australia's most southern lighthouse was chosen in May 1888 after a visit by the Hobart Engineer, Mr Meech. Construction began in January 1890, with J & R Duff of Hobart with 400 metres of double haulage way, 400 metres of single trolley line, 75 chains of roadway, and a tower and three houses -all made from brick shipped from Oyster Cove. The tower was designed by Huckson and Hutchison of Hobart and was completed in 1891.
From the inauguration until the installation of the automated light, the lighthouse was manned by a small staff of lighthouse keepers, who constituted the total population of the island. Maatsuyker Island Lighthouse was the last Australian lighthouse still being officially operated by light keepers.


Weather conditions are extreme; the unforgiving Roaring Forties are a particular problem, with gusts of up to 176 km/h. The first keepers of the light took
chickens with them, but the fowls blew away into the ocean, vegetables get blown flat by the wind and it rains 249 days a year.

Unfortunately, a majority of the most popular clothing brands source and manufacture their clothes overseas. They do this because it’s cost effective, however overseas production and fast fashion come with a negative, carbon intensive environmental impact. When you buy locally, you have a higher quality control and you avoid the heavy carbon emissions of overseas shipping. Popular clothing manufacturing destinations like China, Bangladesh and India typically lack the strict environmental regulations on their factories we have here, meaning it’s easy for them to dispose of their waste in an unethical manner polluting the world’s waterways with toxic chemicals and microplastics. This is because we have laws set in place to make sure that no unfair labor treatment or unethical working conditions can exist. In fact, sustainable clothing guarantees you won’t have to continue buying new clothes all the time. There is a growing awareness of the importance of making our planet cleaner, fairer and safer.
